Family is a hot topic, changes in Western society and laws have put the traditional ideas of what family is under stress. Advertisers (a good cultural weather vane) can still use the mum/dad and kids model but often they choose not to. Christians have stepped in to defend "family values". But often these are not based on any understanding of the Bible, or of a theology of family. We risk merely being culturally conservative. Supporting the way things were against the way they are.
So, when Glyn Carpenter asked me to write about what the Bible says about family I gladly had a go. You can find the post "What is a family?" on the Vision Network site. Hey Tim, good article.
I enjoyed hearing a little of a new Genesis translation a week or so ago entitled, "At the Start...genesis Made New" by Mary Phil Korsak. It brings out some interesting ideas about the Adam and Eve narrative.

No, I've not seen that translation, but she was interviewed on the ABC programme "The Spirit of Things" a while back and explains some of her choices, like "side" instead of the traditional "rib" for the making of woman...

Yes, I heard about it on the same show - I was very interested in some of her choices and the changes they make to reading the text.
My Hebrew's still nowhere close to that level. Still at, "And the men killed the King and the daughter of the King did...something. What's that squiggle mean again?"

As my Greek teacher told me (and as I did not do with Greek - to my shame now) the trick is to keep using it, he suggested reading a daily portion from the Greek NT (I'd recommend at least half the weeks - or however one divides the time - reading from the Hebrew Bible too!
