Email : Old - IM : Young ::
Stephen posts about the "
Teens: E-mail is for old people" item, adding the interesting comment "
If you want responsive and real-time communication, why not incarnate?" with a link to
this UserFriendly cartoon.
BUT the cartoon just so does not get it, IM allows communication with multiple others, while
not being incarnate, or even wholly "there" to them. Whatever old folks think (and in this conversation I definitely count as - old possibly nearly Paleolithic ;-) whatever oldies think IM is not about "conversation" as a telephone call is (even a hurried mobile call), IM is about communicating
whilst doing something else - like homework, or communicating with six other people who form two or three different circles of contacts... IM is to telephone as the SETI project (to use many many PCs downtime to compute) is to running Pacman on a Commodore PET.
