  Home sweet home?
No time to post, busy marking, still...

But to spread my delight, here's a picture looking north from the proposed house site of the property we are buying.

  Christmas Newsletter
We have written our family Christmas newsletter. If you have not received a copy then please just ask and I'll add you to the list, it does not mean that we don't want to keep in touch, just that our list is old and patchy!

It contains family news from the last two years (since the last annual letter ;) and details of our planned sabbatical travel that I won't be posting here...

To get a copy just tell me tim@carey.ac.nz

  Family, carnival and marking
I have nearly finished marking the three sets of assignments that were due while I was on holiday - nearly but not yet quite! This evening is my presentation on Family - if you are in Auckland do come (at Carey at 7pm), and I am almost ready... So, I have not been posting... But Sansblogue is not dead, and I am also preparing the Biblical Studies Carnival. Do please send me nominations, if you don't, and especially if few nominations are made in the NT area then it will risk being a very Hebrew focused carnival ;-) YHBW

Dys/functional families: what are biblical family values?
Traditional modern Western family structures and values are crumbling or under attack. Christian responses are often little more than a knee-jerk defence of the Victorian model of Western nuclear family (often also with a Victorian patriarchalism as part of the package) dressed up with a few selected biblical verses which are claimed to support this model.

Robert Ronaldson Rennie with his wife Helen Robertson and their son James and first daughter Jean.
From Keithr

In a paper for the Tyndale Carey Graduate School (but open to anyone who is interested) I will examine the family narratives of the Hebrew Bible to see what values may be discerned in these stories of dys/functional families, and how these might help us develop a more useful theology of family for 21st Century Christianity.

Date : September 17th
Time : 7pm
Place: Carey Baptist College

All welcome.

  What is a family?
One of the many jobs that I have not managed to squeeze in (till now) in the rush to get caught up after the summer holiday and before that a trip to SBL and to visit family in the UK was to visit the blogs of my Tyndale Carey Graduate School colleague, Mark Keown. On his (almost?) eponymous blog Dr Mark K has a fine post on a topic that concerns me" What is family" (for my posts see: " What is a family?" "Does the Bible present a preferred pattern of family?" and "Reading the Bible: seeking teaching on family").

Mark and I seem (I only write "seem" because although we are now colleagues we work in different institutions and meek but rarely and have not talked about these issues face to face!) to be in profound agreement, but Mark's post presents a positive view that corresponds to and perhaps fills out what I wrote from a more cautious perspective.
