For a paper I am writing I need some expert help from someone who has studied the NT more recently than I. Perhaps one of you can assist me. I need to do a lexeme search of the Greek NT text restricting my search to:

Material common to Matthew and Luke
Material special to Luke
Material special to Matthew

I have access to Bibleworks and Logos. Is there any way to do this, or does Z Hubert or someone else facilitate such a search online?

Tim,

In BibleWorks go to:

Tools - Word List Manager

Click:

"Load or Generate Word List"

In the version drop down menu choose:

"BNM"

Select: "Load words from a Bible version"

in the Verse Range Limits enter:

Matt & Luke

Click: "Create List"

This will give you a list of words common to both Matthew and Luke.

Thanks, Joe! That looks like a neat tool. Though actually what I want to be able to do is see which occurrences of πατὴρ are in All the Gospels, in Matthew alone, in Mark alone, in Luke alone etc... It looks to me as if the |Tools| |Synopsis Window| should allow me to do that, but I run into problems with it. First an error message "Cannot find file PATH/nau.dbx which I suspect means that for some reason I need to reinstall. But also when my NT colleague does this and double clicks on the search result the Synopsis window does not seem to follow...

Tim,

This is even easier.

Just type:

l Matt (that is a lowercase L) on the command line and hit enter.

You limits are now set to just Matthew.

type .πατὴρ and hit enter

you now have all the occurrences in Matthew.

Type l mark and hit enter to set the limits to mark, etc.

You can also do this in the Word List Manager as above and create multiple lists then compare the lists between books, etc.

Thanks again, but again npot quite, I am interested in the differences between the material that is common to all, and that which is particular to one or shared by Mt and Luke. The question is whether in remembering Jesus words the different stages in the Gospel tradition remember his use of "father" differently.

So I am not as interested in occurrences in Mat as those in Mat that are not in Luke or Mark...

BTW that l trick is a usefiul keyboard shortcut I must remember!
